Cramlington chocolatiers sweet on regional campaign

Northumberland Confectioners Cathy and Matthew Stephenson are backing a county-wide campaign that showcases Northumberland’s thriving business community.

The entrepreneurs' Cramlington-based business, Sweetdreams, has been delighting customers since 1985 with the much-loved Choc Nibbles brand of confectionery. However, after a £750,000 investment in a new 25,000sqft factory, the chocolate makers have experienced a big boost in production, creating new jobs in Northumberland and adding unique and exciting products to an ever-expanding portfolio of treats.

Peering inside the doors of the factory, a mouth-watering film for the Discover our Land campaign shows Sweetdreams’ rising fortunes and explores the impact Northumberland has had on their success.

Cllr Cath Homer, cabinet member for Culture, Arts, Leisure and Tourism said: “What better time to announce our new ambassadors than National Chocolate Week! We don’t need to sugar-coat Northumberland to demonstrate our success, but in this case we can do just that!

"Sweetdreams has grown from a small family business into a leader in UK confectionery innovation employing a dedicated local workforce who take great pride in their products. From developing ‘free from ’and vegan chocolates to chocolate coating freeze dried fruits, the business is attracting clients from across the UK and overseas looking for high-quality, cutting-edge confectionery.

“The Discover our Land campaign showcases why businesses big and small should consider Northumberland as a place to build success and we are delighted to tell Sweetdreams’ inspiring story in support of this.”

Launched in January this year, the Discover our Land campaign aims to unlock regional pride by sharing stories from local businesses, community groups, tourist attractions and individuals in all corners of Northumberland.

Speaking of her own pride at being involved in the campaign, Sweetdreams owner, Cathy Stephenson said: “Sweetdreams has been based in Northumberland now for over 30 years. We’re passionate about bringing back a traditional artisan approach to chocolate confectionery through innovation, taste and creativity. Technically we’re at the top of our game and we’re attracting new customers from UK and the rest of the world, and proud to be placing Northumberland firmly on the map as a hub to drive the future of confectionery manufacturing.

“We’re continuing to drive investment in the business, into creating a skilled workforce and into our community and Northumberland can offer a wealth of support for businesses to tap into. Whether you’re a start-up or established business, the support network can assist with growth or if seeking to develop international trade relationships. The ‘Discover our Land’ campaign and it’s ambassadors, is an amazing display of the strength and diversity of business in the region, and something we are extremely proud and honoured to be part of.”
